International Day of Women and Girls in Science

In 2015, The United Nations declared 11th February as The International Day of Women and Girls in Science in an effort to achieve gender equality. Since then the campaign has triggered partnerships between universities and businesses and resulted in better graduate study options for young women, but there’s still some way to go to close the gender gap in the sciences.

It starts with girls in science who want to learn and become women scientists in the future. Research has shown that girls are systematically tracked away from science-related subjects, which results in a small number of women in STEM occupations. The International Day of Women and Girls in Science seeks to raise awareness and increase opportunities for girls and women in the science field.

How to Celebrate the International Day of Women in Science

Part of this international day is also about providing access to careers in engineering and science. If you’re part of the industry, gather your resources and find a STEM event near you. It’s time to mobilize your business and show female alumni the opportunities you have on offer.

Do your part for science and gender equality, which is one of the sustainable development goals in the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Be sure to invite women, who are already working in science and engineering to give talks to encourage young women at the start of their careers.
